Music is a key aspect of the plot so the soundtrack has to be brilliant. Dolems fight using songs. The names of the dolems refer to musical notation such as Allegretto and Vivace. Even the pilot of RahXephon is called an instrumentalist.
The music of RahXephon and different from other anime soundtracks. It's unique, jazzy and mellifluous. All in all, you either love it or not at all.
The opening theme, Hemisphere was composed by Yoko Kanno and sung by Maaya Sakamoto, who is also the seiyuu of Haruka Shitow. Yoko Kanno is a renowned composer and took part in creating music for Ghost in the Shell, Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop and various other anime. Yoko Kanno and Maaya Sakamoto first worked together for opening single of The Visions of Escaflowne. Maaya Sakamoto also had her debut role as a seiyuu in the series. She also sang the ending song of the RahXephon movie, Tune the Rainbow.

The rest of the soundtrack was composed by Ichiko Hashimoto. She is a jazz pianist, composer and singer. She has released over twenty albums. She has also done acting. Her sister, Mayumi Hashimoto sings some of the songs in RahXephon. Ichiko Hashimoto also does Maya Kamina's voice in the anime.
